Why are sports important?
Recent studies have discovered that in addition to improving physical health, sports play a positive role in youth development. This includes improved academic achievement, higher self-esteem, fewer behavioral problems, and increased quality of life both physically and mentally. These studies focus on the effects of sport by using the five “C’s”— competence, confidence, connections, character, and caring. These are considered critical components of positive youth development. It is thought that by playing sports—the discipline of training, learning teamwork, following the leadership of coaches and captains, learning to lose— these athletes are provided lifelong skills for their future.
Benefits of Sports!
Along with getting exercise, making friends, and playing a sport they enjoy, studies have shown that children participating in sports when compared to peers who don't, show:
- higher grades
- greater personal confidence and self-esteem
- stronger peer relationships
- greater family interaction
- more restraint in avoiding risky behavior
It is important to know that the sport alone does not produce these positive benefits. The people involved and the environment they are in is crucial. That is why our league employs volunteers and coaches who have a passion for helping children learn much more than football.
